Reaching the Last Mile (RLM) Project in Nigeria: Delivering Treatment, Care, and Hope

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as onchocerciasis (river blindness) and lymphatic filariasis continue to impact millions of people across Nigeria, especially those in remote, underserved communities. These preventable diseases cause not only physical suffering but also social stigma, loss of income, and reduced quality of life.

In Nigeria, RLM is being implemented through a consortium of partners led by Sightsavers

HANDS Nigeria is actively reaching last-mile communities in:

  • Kano State – We ensure widespread treatment access through Mass Drug Administration (MDA) activities.

  • Jigawa & Yobe States – Delivering comprehensive interventions including:

    • Mass Drug Administration (MDA)

    • Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP)

    • Hydrocele surgeries for those affected by lymphatic filariasis.

Sightsavers, CBM International, and HANDS Nigeria are united by a shared vision: to reach the unreached, serve the underserved, and bring health and hope to the States that we cover.

The Human Impact

This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people. It’s about men regaining their ability to work and provide for their families, about women feeling relief from years of suffering, and about children growing up in healthier communities. Every dose of medicine, every surgery, and every outreach effort moves us closer to eliminating NTDs and breaking cycles of poverty and neglect.

Looking Ahead

With continued support and community engagement, we are confident that Nigeria can eliminate these devastating diseases. The RLM project is not just a health intervention—it is a movement for equity, justice, and sustainable change.

Together, we are proud to be reaching last-mile communities—delivering treatment, care, and hope where it’s needed most.
