World Glaucoma Day 2025
Today, in commemoration of World Glaucoma Day, HANDS Nigeria, in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Health and other partners, organised an awareness road walk to sensitise the public on the dangers of glaucoma and the importance of early detection.
The road walk, which saw enthusiastic participation from health professionals, partner organisations, and community members, aimed to spread awareness about glaucoma's silent yet irreversible effects and the need for regular eye check-ups.
Following the walk, a press briefing was held at the Plateau State Secretariat, where the Honourable Commissioner for Health Dr. Nicholas Bamlong, addressed the media, reaffirming the government’s commitment to eye health and preventive interventions. Representatives of partner organisations also delivered goodwill messages, highlighting the need for continued collaboration in tackling preventable blindness.
On behalf of HANDS Nigeria and Sightsavers, our Programme Director Dr. Innocent Emereuwa, delivered a goodwill message, emphasising the importance of integrated eye health services and sustained public awareness to reduce the glaucoma burden in Nigeria.
Glaucoma remains a leading cause of irreversible blindness, but with early detection and treatment, vision loss can be prevented. HANDS Nigeria remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote better eye health across communities.
